Self-defence for students in Maastricht

Student life can be exciting, social and busy. Whether you are studying at Maastricht University, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences or another educational institution in Maastricht, feeling confident and comfortable in your surroundings is important.

Our women’s self-defence course in Maastricht combines practical techniques with awareness, communication and confidence-building.

You will learn how to:

  • recognise potentially unsafe situations;
  • trust your intuition;
  • communicate clearly and confidently;
  • set and protect your personal boundaries;
  • escape from different types of grabs and holds;
  • use simple and effective self-defence techniques;
  • respond safely and confidently under pressure;
  • develop greater physical and mental awareness.

We practise step by step in a safe, supportive and respectful environment.

For international and female students

Are you an international student or expat living in Maastricht? You are very welcome.

The course can be taught in English, making it accessible to international students and women who are new to Maastricht. You can learn together with other women in a friendly and supportive environment.

You do not need to speak Dutch to participate.

Why choose women’s self-defence?

Self-defence is not about becoming aggressive or learning to fight. It is about awareness, confidence, boundaries and knowing how to respond.

During the course, you develop practical skills that can help you feel more confident in everyday situations — while also becoming more aware of your body, your surroundings and your own boundaries.

A welcoming environment

You do not need to be strong, athletic or experienced in martial arts. The exercises are adapted to your level and personal boundaries are respected.

The course is taught by female instructors and is specifically designed for women.

Meet your instructor

Alice Wellum

Alice has practised martial arts for more than 20 years, including Wu Shu (Kung Fu) and Tai Chi, and has taught women’s self-defence since 2014.

Alongside her work as an instructor, Alice is a researcher and lecturer at Maastricht University, specialising in the prevention of sexual violence and empowerment. She combines her practical martial arts experience with knowledge about awareness, boundaries, communication and empowerment.

Her aim is to create a supportive environment where every woman can develop greater confidence and discover her own strength.

“Self-defence starts with trusting yourself.”
